About The Wine

Richard Arrowood has had a fascination with Late Harvest White Riesling that extends well over 40 years. He is one of California's undisputed master of Auslese, Beerenauslese, and Trockenbeerenauslese-styled sweet Rieslings. These are lush, nectar-like wines with a crisp acidity that carries the fruit flavors into a lingering finish.

Our 2008 Select Late Harvest Riesling comes from a one-acre block planted in 1997 at Saralee's Vineyard in the Russian River Valley appellation. Cool temperatures and morning fog from the nearby Pacific Ocean promote the development of Botrytis cinerea, or "noble rot" in the vineyards. This beneficial mold shrivels the grapes, concentrating the sugars and intensifying the flavors. To maintain the pure fruit character of the grapes, we fermented and aged the wine in stainless steel and prevented the start of malolactic fermentation.

Tasting Notes

This Trockenbeerenauslese-styled 2008 Select Late Harvest Riesling contains 26.5 grams of residual sugar. The beautiful gold color is an indication of the wine's extraordinary intensity. Complex aromas of honey, apricot, white peach, and orange blossom mingle in the bouquet. On the palate there are notes of bright pear, stone fruit and honeyed apple. The noticeable sweetness is entirely balanced by a crisp acidity in the finish.

We expect this wine to age gracefully for many years to come. You can enjoy it alone after a meal, or match it with Crème brûlée, fresh berries, pear tart with anglaise, or experiment with your favorite cheese. You can also think about pouring it over ice cream. The possibilities are endless.
