2001 Arrowood
Special Select Late Harvest White Riesling, Hoot Owl Creek Vineyards
Region/Origin:
Alexander Valley Residual Sugar: 28.5 g per 100 ml
Total Acid: .84 g per 100 ml Alcohol: 8.2% Final pH: 3.6 Blend: 100% White Riesling
Winemaker's Notes
This late harvest White Riesling is loaded with the redolence of peaches and apricots, intertwined with hints of caramel apple and butterscotch. The ripe fruit carries through on the palate; additionally, the flavor of honeydew melon is evident in the long, lengthy finish. Because we ferment this wine in stainless steel and avoid any malolactic fermentation, we retain its intense aromatics and complex flavors as well as the natural, bright acidity that balances with the sweetness of the wine.
Vineyard
Hoot Owl Creek Vineyards, in Sonoma County's Alexander Valley, is one of Richard Arrowood's favorite vineyards. When we are lucky enough to have a growing season that, like 2001, results in botrytized White Riesling from this vineyard, he's utterly ecstatic. Modeled after Germany's great Trockenbeerenauslesen styled wines, the 2001 Special Select Late Harvest White Riesling from Hoot Owl Creek Vineyards reflects Richard's passion for and familiarity with the variety and proves that, when well made, California late harvest Rieslings can hold their own on the international stage.
Chef's Suggestions
Although this wine will continue to age and improve over the years, it can certainly be enjoyed now with myriad desserts such as peach and apricot cobbler, créme brulee, or, to bring back childhood memories, a hot caramel vanilla ice cream sundae.
