Winemaker's Notes
Dating back to the late Middle Ages, Riesling originally hails from Germany, and is considered the countrys preeminent wine grape variety by wine aficionados worldwide. The variety is recognized for its powerful aromas, incredible age-worthiness and ability to communicate the characteristics of the soil in which its grown without losing its distinct varietal characteristics.
Because of the vines hardy wood, Riesling is extremely resistant to frost and, therefore, excels in cooler climates where it can ripen more slowly. These conditions make it an ideal source for sweet, late harvest wines made from grapes infected with Botrytis cinerea, or "Noble Rot", as to which it is commonly referred. Botrytis cinerea affects the grapes by withering the skins and dehydrating the grape, thus concentrating its natural sugar and acid levels.
Since 1972, Richard Arrowood has been making some of Californias finest late harvest Rieslings. His approach is simple: select the right vineyards, control the yields and ferment at cool temperatures to extract as much varietal characteristics as possible. The Arrowood 2001 Select Late Harvest White Riesling, crafted from grapes grown in Sonoma County's Alexander Valley, beautifully reflects this philosophy.
To start, the nose is downright intoxicating, with intense aromas of honeyed apricot, peaches and fresh crushed pineapple. The aromatics carry through on the palate, and last through the seemingly endless finish. With its gorgeous golden yellow hue, complex flavors and luscious texture this wine will make a dramatic ending to any dinner party, and will continue to develop in the bottle for many years to come.
