Winemaker's Notes
The secret to making a classic late harvest wine is botrytis cinerea, or, sometimes referred to as the Noble Rot. When botrytis attacks a vineyard it dehydrates the grapes, thereby concentrating all of the natural sugar and acidity in each berry affected. The result, as in our 2000 Select Late Harvest White Riesling from Hoot Owl Creek in the Alexander Valley, is a sweet nectar of a wine with a crisp acidity that carries the intense fruit flavors into a lingering finish. This Late Harvest White Riesling is loaded with complex aromas of honey, apricot and orange, with a hint of clove and allspice in the background. The ripe fruit carries over into the luscious mouthfeel, where it develops into butterscotch and honey flavors with a subtle top note of vanilla cream, not unlike creme brule. With aeration, complex aromas and flavors of tropical mango and papaya unfold. The noticeable sweetness is entirely balanced by a clean, crisp acidity in the finishwe expect it to age gracefully for many years to come. This wine is truly a rich treat that deserves to be enjoyed on its own, or with a simple dessert, like fresh fruit.
