Winemaker's Notes
Because of its ability to produce serious red wines capable of aging gracefully for decades, Syrah enjoys a reputation as one of the worlds noblest grape varieties.
In the United States, Syrahs rise in both quality and popularity has been quite impressive. Luckily for us, Sonoma County has proven itself as one of the premier growing regions for Syrah in California. This, coupled with Richard Arrowood's passion for Rhone-style wines, creates an exceptionally crafted Syrah, such as this years vintage of our 1999 Saralee's Vineyard Syrah. With its muscular structure of fruit and tannins, this wine is approachable now, and will continue to age gracefully for many years to come.
Our 1999 Syrah will pair nicely with a hearty eggplant dish, any braised meat or Mediterranean-style meal.
Vintage
Quite simply, our 1999 Saralee's Vineyard Syrah is an exceptional wine. Reminiscent of our 1996 vintage, it is lovely, complex and mouth-filling with intense color, aromas and flavors.
Vineyard
This is the first in a series of three great vintages of Saralee's Vineyard Syrah. This shy-bearing vineyard is located in the Russian River Valley of Sonoma County, where the long, cool days and cooler evenings of the 1999 season gave us incredible hang time. A nice burst of heat in late September pushed the fruit to optimum ripeness, with harvest completed on September 23rd.
Fermentation & Aging
As is our tradition, these grapes were co-fermented with a small portion of Viognier to add aromatic and flavor complexity, as well as additional depth of color. In keeping with our non-interventional approach to winemaking, the wine was not fined or filtered.
