Winemaker's Notes
Syrah is recognized for producing rich, complex and distinctive wines with an incredible capacity for long-term aging. Additionally, the grape adapts well to a variety of growing environments; because of its flexibility in the vineyard and its sensuousness in the glass, it enjoys tremendous popularity in many countries, including France, Australia and, of course, the United States.
This is the first year we have produced a vineyard designated Syrah from this little two acre gem of a vineyard in the Dry Creek Valley. Owned by Maynard and Grace Kuljian, the vineyard is perfectly situated at the northern end of Dry Creek Valley, where it benefits from the regions warm days with evening and morning fog coming in from the Pacific Ocean to the west.
Distinctive and dramatic, the 2000 Syrah from Kuljian Vineyard is packed with personality, reflecting the depth and intensity of this vintage. In the nose, concentrated aromas of anisette, Chinese camphor and dark cherry are followed by a slight trace of dry Asian herbs. Rich, dark fruit flavors and aging in French oak barrels gives the wine a captivating sweetness on the palate that stands out beautifully against a background of earthier, smoky notes. Generously perfumed, voluptuously textured, and charmingly persistent, this wine will pair beautifully with many foods from chicken marsala to beef tenderloin with Shiitake mushrooms and potato cakes. Be sure to put some away to savor at a later date.
