Winemaker's Notes
This wine is not for the faint of heart. Forward, focused aromas of anisette, Chinese camphor and smoked deli meat take center stage while hints of gardenia float in the background. In the mouth, these aromas carry through all the way to the long, lengthy finish. This powerful wine is so heavy and rich that the mouthfeel is almost viscous. It will complement equally weighty foods such as cassoulet, rack of lamb, or strong, flavorful cheeses such as Stilton or bleu.

Vintage
The 2000 growing season in Sonoma Valley was a bit of a roller coaster ride, but one that ended with an incredible harvest. An early bloom in May was followed by a relatively uneventful June. July, however, came roaring in with record heat that caused sugar levels to quickly rise. It quieted down again in August with cooler temperatures, allowing flavor and color development to catch up to sugars. September caused us some aggravation with light rains but, fortunately, we were able to bring in all the fruit at optimum ripeness prior to the heavier rains of autumn.

Vineyard
Only in its second vintage, this 100% varietal Syrah is a phenomenal wine of depth, complexity and richness! It is blended from three distinctly different vineyards in Sonoma Valley. The fruit from Schaefer-Sonoma Vineyards is grown on a hillside, in fine-grained volcanic soil from 800 to 1500 feet in elevation. Because the vines have to struggle in these growing conditions, they tend to produce extremely intense, concentrated fruit. Along with its earthy aromas, this fruit brings a dark, inky red color to the blend. Located on a valley floor of southern Sonoma Valley, Crane Vineyards brings dark berry characters to the blend. Although the fruit grows in the valley floor, the sites susceptibility to winter frost is a natural crop thinner, yielding very deep, concentrated grapes. Last, the Syrah from our own Arrowood Estate Vineyards is located on the valley floor, with marginal volcanic soils. The fruit from this vineyard brings certain lushness to the blend. Again, a lack of soil fertility contributes to the overall concentration of the resultant wine. Each site brings its own personality and character to the blend. The result is an intense, weighty wine of uncommon complexity.
