Wines made from the Pinot Blanc grape are not the best-known white wines in the world, but at Arrowood we think they are nonetheless some of the best white wines made. The Pinot Blanc grape is a descendent of Pinot Gris, itself a lighter-berried version of Pinot Noir. Many older California vines labeled Pinot Blanc are often instead the much less distinguished Muscadet grape Melon. In Sonoma County, we are fortunate that Saralee's Vineyard is one of the few vineyards in the state to produce a true, certified Pinot Blanc clone. The 1999 Pinot Blanc is one of the best of this variety that we have produced in years. With vibrant aromatics and stunning fruit flavors, it dazzles the nose and the palate. The 1999 vintage yielded a very low tonnage, leading to a highly concentrated wine. The nose of this wine is packed with ripe tropical fruit, with subtle notes of hazelnut emanating from the French oak in which the wine was aged. The wines color is a perfect match for lush aromas of ripe, sweet peaches, along with pear, orange, lemon, melon, and honeysuckle. Intense, rich flavors border on the decadent while maintaining a crisp structure. Apricots, orange blossom, and peaches burst on the palate, and a lengthy, creamy finish enhances the wines complexity.
Our Pinot Blanc underwent seven months of aging sur lie (on the lees) in French oak barrels, which imparted subtle hazelnut and spice without compromising the intense fruit qualities. The crops low tonnage level means there are very few bottles of this wine availableonly 400 cases were made and it is only available at the winery or through our wine club.
While this is a lovely wine to enjoy on its own, you can't lose if you serve it with any fish dish. Try it with a grilled snapper or flounder. It will also complement Thai-inspired or other spicy Asian sauces over shellfish or noodles, and will go nicely with a butternut squash soup with scallion cream.
