Winemaker's Notes
Since many of Sonoma County's finest wines have been compared to the great wines of Burgundy, it is fitting that Pinot Blanc have its origins in that famous French region, as well. While Pinot Blanc has often been confused with the lessor Muscadet grape Melon de Bourgogne, Saralee's Vineyard in the Russian River Valley is one of the few California vineyards to grow a certified true Pinot Blanc clone. In recent years, this wine has begun to receive the attention it deserves, as people discover how approachable, versatile and delicious it can be. Here at Arrowood Vineyards, we have a long-standing love affair with Pinot Blanc; this release marks our 10th vintage, and it looks like one of our best yet.
The 2001 Pinot Blanc is a seductive, fruit-driven wine, with forward aromas of melon, pineapple and peach. Floral and vanilla nuances hover in the background, creating a beautiful backdrop upon which the more forward fruit characteristics can shine. The aromas follow through to a rainbow of similar flavors in the mouth that, along with the rich, velvety texture and crisp acids create a lasting impression. Additionally, barrel aging and malolactic fermentation adds toasty nuances and textural weight to the blend.
While this delicious wine can certainly be saved for the future, you can enjoy it now with a wide variety of foods including fish and pork. It will also pair well with medium-rich textures and sauces, or as an aperitif with olives and cheese.
