Winemaker's Notes
At one time, not so long ago, this French grape variety was known as poor mans Chardonnay. Although the two varieties share similar flavors and textures, historically Pinot Blanc has not gained the same stature. Until recently, that is. Over 1000 acres are now planted in Californias cooler climate winegrowing regions, including Sonoma, Monterey and Napa, and its popularity continues to rise as people discover how approachable, versatile and delicious the wine can be.
Vintage
Although the 2000 harvest produced bountiful yields, the fruit from this vintage is nonetheless packed with mature, rich fruit flavors and intense varietal character. The end result is an elegantly textured wine with incredible complexity and depth. It offers aromas of spicy citrus and vanilla in the nose, followed by marmalade and honeysuckle flavors mixed with perfumed notes of jasmine and gardenia.
Vineyard
In California, Pinot Blanc is quite often mistaken for Melon de Bourgogne, a lesser relative. We are fortunate to obtain our fruit from Saralee's Vineyard in the Russian River Valley, one of the few vineyards in California to produce a true, certified Pinot Blanc clone.
Fermentation & Aging
Eight months of sur lies aging in new Louis Latour French oak barrels adds nuances of toast to the long, lengthy finish without masking any of the varietal character of the wine. While this wine will complement a wide variety of foods, it pairs particularly well with fish and spicy Asian dishes.
