Winemaker's Notes
The Merlot grape has had an interesting evolution in both France and the United States. Traditionally used as a major component in the great French wines of St. Emilion and Pomerol, it is now the most widely planted red grape variety in Bordeaux. In the United States, Merlot has gained enormous popularity in the last decade, and is now one of the most enjoyed wine varieties in the country.
Our 1999 Merlot is an inspired blend of several different Sonoma County vineyards. It is a perfect example of the intense aromatics, concentrated berry flavors and harmonious tannins achieved by blending grapes grown in both the cooler and warmer microclimates within this appellation.
This particular vintage brings back memories of our fabulous 1990 Merlot, with its intense fruit, supple tannins and deep, dark, inky color. Forward aromas of blackberry, cassis and black cherry mingle with the rich flavors of cherry and plum in the mouth. Soft tannins and oak nuances add to the luscious, almost velvety mouthfeel followed by a long, lingering blackberry finish. The 1999 Merlot Sonoma County can be enjoyed now, but it will also reward those willing (and able) to give it some time in the cellar.
A juicy steak or even barbecued ribs are perfect accompaniments to this wine. It also tastes great with a lightly seasoned, grilled swordfish.
