Winemaker's Notes
With the release of our 1999 Sonoma County Malbec, Richard Arrowood has shown once again, that some of the most rewarding wines can be made from the least likely of grapes. Originally hailing from the Bordeaux region of France, in recent years Malbec has become one of Argentina and Chiles most widely grown grape varieties. Small quantities have also been planted in California, where it is used primarily as a blending grape in Bordeaux-style wines. Weve used Malbec for years in our Arrowood Cabernet Sauvignon to add character and complexity; however, it wasnt until 1992 that we decided to capture its vibrant berry flavors in a 100% varietal bottling.
Vintage
The 1999 vintage is an excellent example of classic Malbec. Rich, powerful aromas of black fruits lay the groundwork for the fresh, ripe, red berry flavors that follow. Effusive flavors of raspberry, strawberry and boysenberry mingle with subtle hints of oak, giving way to a nice, smooth vanilla background nuance. A slightly leathery texture and long, lingering finish complete the picture, while our non-interventional approach of not fining or filtering allows this wines true flavors and characteristics to emerge in the bottle. Quite simply, our 1999 Sonoma County Malbec is a lovely wine from a standout vintage.
Chef's Suggestions
This wine is surprisingly versatile and pairs well with many different foods. Enjoy it with roasted rack of lamb, pasta primavera, or a peppery pork tenderloin.
