Winemaker's Notes
Malbec is a grape variety originally used in French Bordeaux blends and is primarily recognized as the legendary black wine of Cahors. In recent years, plantings in France have decreased; however, Malbec has become a widely planted varietal in Argentina and Chile, where its rich, inky color and fat, juicy character have all but turned into a national treasure.

When its yields are kept low and it is picked very ripe, it produces wines with vivid black-raspberry aromas and flavors. As a stand-alone varietal, it is far smoother than Cabernet Sauvignon, slightly fruitier, and can be consumed when relatively young. Although weve been using Malbec for years in our Arrowood Cabernet Sauvignon to add character and complexity, it wasnt until 1992 that we decided to capture its vibrant berry flavors in a 100% varietal bottling.

We think our 2000 Sonoma County Malbec is a stunner - perhaps one of our best yet! In the glass, forward red and black berry aromas only hint at the creamy, mouthwatering flavors that follow. Subtle nuances of oak and vanilla and an earthy, leathery texture are the result of over two years of aging in French and American oak barrels. A rich, weighty finish is the final reward. To ensure that the wines true flavors and characteristics will emerge in the bottle, we do not fine or filter the wine. With its seductive nose, intense fruit flavors and dark, inky color this wine is sure to be a hit at any gathering involving rich flavorful foods such as hearty beef stew, osso bucco or spaghetti with meatballs.
