Winemaker's Notes
The fruit for the Grand Archer 2001 Chardonnay comes from the Russian River Valley and Alexander Valley, two distinctly different growing regions in Sonoma County. The Russian River Valley, where temperatures are cooler, produces fruit with higher acids and crisp varietal characteristics. The Alexander Valley, on the other hand, is generally much warmer throughout the day. Grapes from this area have broader, ripe fruit flavors, lending a lushness to the final blend.
The 2001 growing season got off to a rough start. A dry winter, cold spring and exceptionally hot temperatures in May and June had vintners quite nervous. Fortunately, August brought slightly cooler days and nights that continued through harvest, extending hang time and allowing the fruit to develop fully, with balanced, uniform flavors, sugars and acids.
The Grand Archer 2001 Chardonnay offers up effusive aromas of ripe pear, apricot and lemon, with nuances of spicy tropical fruit. The aromatics carry through on the palate, and are balanced by crisp acids and a full-bodied texture. 100% barrel fermentation gives the wine a creamy mouthfeel accompanied by just a hint of oak. A long, lingering toasty finish completes the picture.
