Winemaker's Notes
Our 1998 Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon is a dark ruby color with classic provocative fragrances of plums, black cherry and spice. On the palate, the texture is lush and smooth with soft, well-integrated tannins to add structure and length to the black cherry, plum, cassis and wild berry flavors. A finish of anise and spice adds even more dimension and complexity to this wine. As in the past, we did not fine nor filter this wine, to further preserve the richness and complexity.
Vintage
The wet weather effects of El Nino in 1998 really didnt give us much of a spring. This, coupled with a very cool and sometimes wet summer set the stage for a very late harvest with crop levels at 20 to 30% below normal. Our first Cabernet Sauvignon did not make it to the crusher until almost a full month later than usual, and there was even a light rain later on that month. However, what very well could have been a worthy successor to the poor 1989 vintage turned out to be quite the opposite.
Vineyard
In spite of Mother Nature, the small crop ripened beautifully in each of the three viticultural areas our Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are grown. Weather conditions left us with no choice but to leave the grapes on the vine. This elongated hangtime was important. It produced a wonderfully ripe Cabernet Sauvignon that had reached the necessary physiological maturity, resulting in a much better vintage of Arrowood Cabernet Sauvignon than we initially expected.
Viticultural Areas/Vineyards:
Alexander Valley Belle Terre Vineyards, Hoot Owl Creek Vineyards, Petersen Ranch, Robert Young Vineyards
Sonoma Valley Wildwood Vineyards, Smothers Remick-Ridge Vineyards, Arrowood Estate Vineyards
