Winemaker's Notes
We feel that the vineyards of Sonoma County are key to the heart and soul of our Reserve Chardonnay. By skillfully blending lots from cool growing regions, like the Russian River Valley and parts of the Sonoma Valley, we can produce a classic Chardonnay with crisp, clean acidity and luscious fruit and floral notes for a balanced, long life.
Vineyard
Continuous cool weather well into the summer months of the 1998 growing season delayed harvest, allowing the fruit a longer hangtime on the vine. These conditions resulted in deeper, more intense varietal flavor profiles and balanced finesse. The resultant wine exudes delightful aromas of peach, tropical fruits and honey, with spicy tones of nutmeg. Vibrant fruit flavors of melon, pear and a hint of orange zest lead into a long, pleasant finish with notes of toasty oak, a slight nutmeg spice, and a healthy dose of butterscotch, typical of our Reserve Chardonnay syle .
Fermentation & Aging
As we do with all of our Reserve wines, vineyard lots were hand selected and barrel fermented separately. The wine underwent a secondary malolactic fermemtation while aging sur lie (on the yeast) in French oak barrels for eight months. We then blended and returned the selected lots to French oak barrels for an additional five months to develop even more complexity and depth. In keeping with our non-interventional approach to winemakeing, this wine is not fined or filtered.
