Winemaker's Notes
What happens when you put Rôhne grape varieties from one of the Russian River Valleys most highly regarded vineyards into the hands of Richard Arrowood, a winemaker whos devoted to and passionate about wines from the northern Rôhne Valley of France? You get Arrowood's 2000 Côte de Lune, a lovely blend of Syrah, Grenache Noir, Cinsault, Mourvdre and Viognier from Saralee's Vineyard in the Russian River Valley of Sonoma County.
This year, for the first time, all five of the grape varieties in this complex wine come from this single vineyard. Each variety lends its own distinctive character to the blend; the common thread, however, is the pronounced character and distinct terroir of Saralee's Vineyard, so beautifully showcased in this wine.
The Syrah provides the framework, with its deep, dark color and flavors of rich black fruit. The Grenache Noir adds lush forward fruit flavors and gives the blend softness and approachability. The Cinsault is used to add suppleness and perfumed aromas while the Mourvdre provides medium-weight berry flavors and excellent tannin structure. Last, a touch of Viognier offers floral notes and hints of crisp acidity to the blend.
Heady aromas of candied spice, currants and pepper rise in the glass. These same aromas carry over to the palate, where supple tannins, a silky texture and a long, graceful finish complete the picture. With aromatics and flavors reminiscent of spiced cider, our 2000 Côte de Lune is the perfect compliment to a wide variety of holiday fare, including Thanksgiving turkey, roast beef and leg of lamb. You might even convert the confirmed white wine drinkers in your house with this delightful, easy-drinking wine.
In order to preserve its character and integrity, this wine is not filtered nor fined.
